Also known as "The Jewel of the Blue Ridge" or "The Tahoe of the East," Smith Mountain Lake is 40 miles long, over 20,000 acres and just 30 miles from the City of Roanoke. The lake is formed by both the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers.
The current state record of 53 lbs. 7 oz. was taken in 2000 from our sister lake, Leesville, but prior records were all from Smith Mountain; the last weighing in at 49 lbs. 4 oz. We hope to recapture that record again soon. The restocking program has been very successful over the years producing a lot of fish in the 5-15lb. range.
Smith Mountain Lake also has a variety of other fish, including large and smallmouth bass, white bass, walleye, catfish, crappie, yellow perch and bluegill. Along the banks and in the local hills, we also have some of the finest deer and turkey hunting in Virginia.
Other activities include, of course, water recreation, go-carts, miniature golf, hiking, biking, a State Park, movie theater, drive-in movie theater, wineries, restaurants and shopping. We have two Food Lion grocery stores, Kroger Grocery, Urgent Care, Advance Auto, CVS, ABC Liquor, three home building centers, Grand Furnishings, Sears Home Store, Goodwill and lots of small independent stores and restaurants. Our Fast Food restaurants include Wendy's, Bojangles, Dairy Queen and Subway. Just 25 minutes north in and around the town of Bedford is the National D-Day War Memorial, antique shops, Wal-Mart, Lowe's, restaurants, the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Thomas Jefferson's summer home, Poplar Forest, the Bedford Pottery and local wineries. Just 25 minutes south in the town of Rocky Mount is another Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Kroger, Food Lion, Roses, Peebles, CVS, Walgreens, restaurants and local shopping. Halfway to Rocky Mount is a local creamery and restaurant "Homestead" and they also host a separate bakery. From Rocky Mount, 20 minutes west on Route 40 is the Smith Mountain Lake Dam, museum and park. The City of Roanoke and surrounding suburbs is 25 to 45 minutes away. Downtown Roanoke has an ecological museum, an automobile and train transportation museum, a new art museum, local shops, restaurants and antiques. There are two malls, two civic centers and all amenities a city would provide. On Mill Mountain there is a small zoo and a separate park and picnic area that overlooks the city. Lots to do at and around the lake!
